What's With Andy

I’ll keep it real short this week. While people always reminisce about how awesome Cartoon Network used to be, how many brilliant cartoons were on in the ‘90s and early ‘00s, I haven’t seen anyone really talk about this show. Even in my own circle of acquaintances, it seems like I’m the only one who really truly loved What’s With Andy? and still remember it fondly to this day. Perhaps it’s just because lil’ me had a crush on Andy, but I’d like to think I liked it for its quality too. Watching it now is still hilarious, and not just because I missed it and nostalgia makes everything better.

What’s With Andy? is a cartoon that premiered in 2001 and ran internationally on Fox Kids for three seasons. It centers around Andy Larkin, a troublemaking teen with a passion for the art of pranking. He and his best friend, Danny Pickett, navigate crushes, school, and family as they go about pranking the town of East Gackle.

Although I did say people don’t seem to care much about this show, remind them of the opening theme and they’ll immediately start singing it. It’s such a catchy tune that you can’t help but sing along, and even after all those years, I still know the dubbed lyrics by heart. Memorable~

Andy is incredibly annoying, but in a hilarious way. Because he’s the main character, your perception of his pranks is already not as it should be, since you’re meant to be rooting for him despite how much trouble he causes. With that said, the stuff he comes up with is always funny in some way or another, and never really crosses any lines (from what I remember). He brings color to East Gackle and his vision on pranking as an “art form” is actually quite engaging, because you can’t wait to see if he can pull his pranks off or not.

What I really liked about this show that I think is really innovative is how Andy breaks the fourth wall constantly, having a sort of… doodle time-out which is animated differently and in which he explains his pranks or talks about what’s happening. It’s a glimpse in his inner mind, and the stuff he thinks about and shows in the “Doodle Vision” can branch out into more fantastical settings that really make this show hilarious. His jokes are golden in the story itself, but in his mind? Fantastic.

There’s not a lot to comment on, really. I can’t go into analysis mode with this because it’s simply a feel good, hilarious show with stakes that don’t really get higher than impressing your crush or getting your grandpa back into the art of pranking. It’s toned down since it’s a cartoon for kids, but it still makes jokes you’d find funny as an adult. Each episode is iconic in its own way, and I mean… when you start your show with your main character crossdressing and charming his sister’s crush just to annoy her, you know it’s gonna be a wild ride.

I’ll just leave a list of my favorite episodes down here in case you want to give it a try. If you’re in the mood for some chill fun, definitely watch What’s With Andy?

Season 1 Episode 1 – Just Stuffing

Season 1 Episode 4 – Rhyme Time

“What rhymes with orange?” was legendary back then. Even people who only watched this show if there was nothing else on TV knew about this.

Season 1 Episode 19 – Very Scary Stuff

Genre piece right here.

Season 1 Episode 22 – Bring It Off

The penguin dance was another iconic thing everyone got into.

Season 2 Episode 1 – What’s with Jean-Thomas?

Andy Larkin king of disguises.

Season 2 Episode 25 – All Dressed To Go

The power of friendship is sweet in this one. Or savory?

Season 3 Episode 14 – Daddy! (Dad for a Week)

There’s nothing like two rivals working together. Love this trope.
